The next stage of the new St. Paul’s Hospital and Health Campus at the Jim Pattison Medical Centre is now underway: three shortlisted proponents have been selected to participate in the Request for Proposal (RFP) stage to develop, design, and build the new Clinical Support and Research Centre (CSRC)

They are:

  • Greystar Canada Real Estate
  • Oxford Properties
  • NorthWest Healthcare Properties

“With a century-old culture driven by discovery and learning, research undertaken at the new Clinical Support and Research Centre will impact the health of Canadians for generations to come,” says CEO of St. Paul’s Foundation, Dick Vollet.

Vancouver’s newest hub for research and innovation

The CSRC will be a multi-building, approximately 74,000-square-metre (800,000-square-foot) development at 1002 Station St. in the False Creek Flats area. The research centre will be built directly adjacent and connected to the future St. Paul’s Hospital, allowing us to integrate patient-centred research and innovation in everything we do.

“The past 20 months of this pandemic has amplified the importance of translating research and innovation into clinical practise that saves lives,” says Health Minister Adrian Dix. “The Clinical Support and Research Centre at the new St. Paul’s Hospital and health campus will be a place for discovery, collaboration, and learning, attracting the best and brightest care providers, scientists, and industry partners to deliver excellence and transform care.”

With state-of-the-art core research facilities, infrastructure for emerging technology, and shared prototyping spaces to a 49-space daycare, retail, and other leasable spaces, the CSRC will be a world-class facility more than the sum of its parts to create an environment where experts in medicine and research are brought together to collaborate and spark ideas.

Fiona Dalton, President and CEO of Providence Health Care, explains, “the Clinical Support and Research Centre will bring together Providence’s patients, physicians, researchers, clinicians, corporate staff, and leaders, along with industry players, academic partners and start-ups into one place to share ideas, collaborate on discoveries and innovate new medical advancements that will change the world.”

Delivering a continuum of care on campus

The future CSRC will also have space for medical offices for physicians and specialists. Whether in or out of the hospital, patients will be close to compassionate, integrated, and culturally sensitive care.

The CSRC helps Providence deliver a continuum of care on the new hospital campus — acute care in the hospital, outpatient care in its clinics, and follow-up visits in a specialist’s office in the CSRC. It’s the same patient, same physician, same campus but with the right care, when and where they need it most, as they transition from the hospital to outpatient care, and to community and primary care.

Entering the next phase of the CSRC

“This is an important step as we get closer to having a new St. Paul’s Hospital and health campus,” says Brenda Bailey, MLA for Vancouver-False Creek. “The research centre will bring the latest scientific findings and translate them into better health-care for people in Vancouver and around B.C.”

The development partner will be selected in 2022, with construction expected to begin late-2023. Together, Providence and its development partner will work to attract top talent and create a collaborative platform for discovery and learning.

“It’s exciting to see the project move forward with this next step in the procurement process,” says Melanie Mark, MLA for Vancouver-Mount Pleasant. “The new St. Paul’s Hospital will work to ensure all British Columbians have access to high-quality, state-of-the-art health care.”

This facility will be funded by Providence and St. Paul’s Foundation, which has committed to raising $50 million in support of the CSRC.

The CSRC will be a catalyst for ground-breaking research and innovation to redefine better health and care globally.
