Last month, dozens of Providence Health Care staff stepped away from their desks and into the heart of the community for Providence in the Park—a biannual event held in the Downtown Eastside that brings people together over warm meals, meaningful conversations, and shared humanity.
Led by Providence Health Care’s Mission Team, Providence in the Park reflects a longstanding commitment to supporting those who are unhoused or facing challenges related to mental health or substance use. More than just an outreach initiative, the event is a vivid example of Providence’s mission, values, and culture in action.
“This event was exactly what Providence Health Care is all about,” said Rio Fajardo, a Recruitment Analyst who joined Providence in 2022. “It’s not just about what we do inside our walls. It’s about showing up for the people we serve, wherever they are.”
Volunteers from across the organization, including frontline staff and corporate teams, served meals, distributed comfort kits, and spent time engaging one-on-one with community members, many of whom are among the most vulnerable in the city.
For Netanyah Carter, a fellow Recruitment Analyst, the experience was unforgettable.
“There was no judgment, only acceptance, kindness, and care,” she said. “Even a simple conversation had the power to brighten someone’s day. That’s what made the event so powerful.”
The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with staff, volunteers, and community members coming together in a spirit of mutual respect. Both Rio and Netanyah noted how seamlessly the event aligned with Providence’s vision: to serve with compassion and social justice, particularly those most in need.
The stories shared throughout the day made a lasting impression. One woman expressed heartfelt thanks for a hygiene kit, explaining how difficult it can be to access something as basic as sanitary products.
“That kind of connection is hard to put into words,” said Rio. “It reminded me why I chose this work in the first place, to make a difference, even in small ways.”
“Our goal is to help build trust with people who may hesitate to seek care due to harmful stigmas,” said Netanyah. “Events like this show that we’re willing to meet people where they are, literally and figuratively.”
From a recruitment perspective, the event also sends a strong message about what it means to work at Providence.
“This speaks louder than any job posting,” said Rio. “If you’re looking to join a team that walks the talk when it comes to compassion and community, Providence Health Care is the place to be.”
As the event wrapped up, a woman seated nearby offered a simple but powerful message to the volunteers: “You young people really are the future. You do amazing work.”
For the Providence Health Care team, it was a moment of affirmation, and a reminder that Providence in the Park isn’t just an event—it’s a reflection of who they are, and what they believe in.
“I feel so lucky to work for an organization that doesn’t just talk about values. We live them,” said Netanyah. “And I’ll absolutely be back next time.”
