Charting a new course: Yulia’s path from ER clerk to RN

When Yulia first stepped into the bustling Emergency Department at St. Paul’s Hospital, she was an admitting clerk—helping patients navigate their first moments of care. Fast forward five years, Yulia now walks the halls as a newly graduated Registered Nurse, bringing both clinical expertise and deep compassion to her patients.

“I’ve been with Providence for the last five years in different roles,” Yulia shares. “Starting as an admitting clerk in the ER gave me a unique perspective on patient care. Later, working as an employed student nurse on Medicine units during my studies helped me connect theory to practice in a meaningful way.”

Learning on the job

Yulia recently graduated from the BCIT nursing program and accepted a position on 7AB, where she’s consolidating her knowledge and gaining experience. Her long-term goal? To earn her emergency specialty certification, work in the emergency department, and eventually pursue a Nurse Practitioner designation.

Her path to nursing wasn’t linear. Before entering health care, Yulia earned an MBA, ran a successful photography business (which she still maintains), and managed a busy household with three children, including identical twin boys. “It’s been a journey,” she laughs, “but nursing feels like where I’m meant to be.”

What drives her is the opportunity to make a real difference in patients’ lives. “I love the variety of medical conditions and treatments we see, and I feel strongly about creating partnerships with patients,” she says. “Listening to their wishes, beliefs, and worries helps us build a plan together. It’s incredibly special when you know you’ve helped someone on their health journey.”

Goals for the future

Yulia also has her eyes on the future of health care in Canada. She hopes to see improved access to care and a stronger focus on prevention and education. “I’m excited about the new St. Paul’s Hospital and the role it will play in transforming care,” she adds.

And when she’s not at work? You might find her speeding down a ski slope; her confirmed downhill record is 105 km/h!

From the front desk to the front lines of patient care, Yulia’s story is a testament to growth, resilience, and the power of following your passion. We’re proud to have her as part of the Providence Health Care family.
