How a chance encounter led to a life-saving career

Sometimes, the most meaningful connections begin with a simple conversation.

Kanwalpreet’s journey to Providence Health Care began with a moment of serendipity. While waiting in line to speak with someone at the Douglas College Career Paths Career Fair, he struck up a conversation with Monica, one of our recruiters. As it turns out, Monica had been trying to fill a hard-to-recruit vascular sonographer role, and Kanwalpreet was the perfect fit.

Kanwalpreet Kalsi, a vascular sonographer in the vascular lab.

“I attend career fairs expecting to find great talent, but Kanwalpreet’s unique journey and genuine warmth immediately stood out,” Monica remembers. “Sometimes, it’s about meeting the right person at the right time. It felt like one of those rare moments when everything just fell perfectly into place.”

But what made the interaction truly special was how it unfolded.

“My conversation with the recruiter was incredibly positive and felt very genuine,” Kanwalpreet shares. “She was welcoming and took the time to understand my diverse background, asking not just about my technical skills but also about my experiences in other fields. We discussed how my unique journey could be an asset. My first impression was that Providence values a person’s entire story and looks for individuals who truly align with their mission, fostering a culture of holistic care and respect.”

This moment reflects a core value at Providence Health Care: treating people with dignity, seeing their whole story, and recognizing diversity as a strength.

Kanwalpreet’s journey to health care

Originally from Punjab, India, Kanwalpreet arrived in Canada eight years ago with a strong foundation in cardiovascular sonography and general medicine. Determined to transition his skills into health care in Canada, he pursued further education and took on a variety of roles, from veterinary assistant to research coordinator, sleep technologist, and casual sonographer. Each experience shaped his approach to patient care, blending technical precision with deep empathy.

“My interest in vascular diagnostics really sparked during my sonography training,” Kanwalpreet shares. “The ability to visualize blood flow and contribute to early diagnosis and treatment plans felt incredibly impactful.”

From casual role to life-saving work

After joining Providence in a casual role while completing his training, Kanwalpreet quickly became an integral part of the Vascular Diagnostics Department at St. Paul’s Hospital. His work involves performing non-invasive ultrasound examinations that often lead to life-saving interventions.

One patient story stands out.

“There was a patient who came in with general discomfort,” he recalls. “During her abdominal Doppler, I identified an aneurysm that was far more significant than initially suspected. Because of that early detection and precise measurement, she received timely intervention that prevented a potentially fatal rupture. Hearing that she recovered well and knowing my work played a direct role in saving her life, that’s a moment I carry with me.”

Teamwork that makes a difference

On challenging days, Kanwalpreet finds strength in his purpose and his team.

“The knowledge that my skills are vital and contribute directly to patient well-being keeps me going. And the support from my team, knowing we face challenges together and lift each other up, is incredibly motivating.” He describes his colleagues as “Exceptional. A highly skilled, incredibly supportive, and truly compassionate group of professionals. It feels like a very cohesive and caring family.”

Advice for future health care professionals

Kanwalpreet’s advice to those considering a career in vascular diagnostics or health care?

“Cultivate curiosity, embrace continuous learning, and above all, lead with empathy. This field requires technical precision, but the human connection is just as vital.”

And to those thinking about joining Providence?

“If you’re looking for an organization that genuinely embodies its mission of compassionate care, supports professional growth, and fosters a collaborative environment, then Providence Health Care is an excellent choice.”

Why Providence Health Care?

Kanwalpreet’s story is a powerful reminder that career fairs and networking events aren’t just about job hunting, they’re about showing up, making connections, and staying open to unexpected possibilities. Sometimes, the opportunity that changes everything comes not from what you’re seeking, but from simply putting yourself out there.

“I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Providence Health Care’s mission,” he says. “Being a part of this team allows me to blend my passion for diagnostics with a deep commitment to patient care, and I feel very fortunate to work here.”

The value of real connections

As for Monica, she’ll be talking to everyone she can at events moving forward. “Meeting Kanwalpreet reminded me just how meaningful real connections and conversations can be in finding the best talent, especially for tough-to-fill roles. Sometimes the right candidate is standing right beside you, waiting to be discovered. Never underestimate the power of a simple conversation.”
