Behind the scenes of care: Celebrating 50 years of biomedical engineering excellence

Guests at the Biomedical Engineering 50th Anniversary event at Vancouver General Hospital.

When you walk into a hospital, you might notice the monitors, imaging machines, and other high-tech equipment that help clinicians deliver care. But have you ever wondered who makes sure all that technology works flawlessly? That’s where Biomedical Engineering comes in—a team that’s been quietly shaping health care for decades.

Celebrating 50 years at Vancouver General Hospital

Recently, Providence Health Care joined our Lower Mainland Biomedical Engineering (LMBME) partners to celebrate a major milestone: 50 years of Biomedical Engineering expertise at Vancouver General Hospital. It was more than an anniversary—it was a chance to reflect on how far medical technology has come and the people who make it all possible.

“It was incredible to see so many passionate and talented Biomedical Engineering staff filled with pride and eager to share the work they do,” says Dylan Sanderson, Providence Health Care’s recruiter for Biomedical Engineering. “The event showcased just how much progress has been made and how that progress translates into better patient outcomes.”

The backbone of modern health care

Biomedical Engineering is often behind the scenes, but its impact is everywhere. From life-saving monitors to advanced imaging systems, these professionals ensure that critical medical equipment is safe, reliable, and ready when patients need it most.

“So many advancements in health care are thanks to improvements in medical technology,” Dylan explains. “For clinical teams to deliver exceptional care that equipment must function flawlessly, and that’s where Biomedical Engineering comes in.” “Our Biomedical Engineering teams manage the entire lifecycle of that technology, from evaluation and installation to maintenance and safe disposal,” adds Pej Namshirin, Manager, Biomedical Engineering, Recruitment, Regional Initiatives, and Richmond Operations.

Skills that make a difference

What does it take to thrive in this field? According to Dylan, the most in-demand qualities include:

  • Technical aptitude and troubleshooting skills for complex medical devices
  • Resourcefulness and adaptability in fast-paced environments
  • Strong communication skills for collaboration with clinical teams
  • Collaborative, team-first mindset and genuine passion for contributing to public health care

Opportunities for growth

Biomedical Engineering offers diverse career paths. Professionals can move into leadership roles or specialize in areas such as:

  • Networked Medical Devices – tackling cybersecurity challenges in health care
  • Radiology – working with advanced imaging technologies like MRIs and CT scanners
  • Leading Project Implementations – new technologies and hospital redevelopments

Providence Health Care and LMBME champion continuous learning through mentorship, specialized training, and an Education Coordinator dedicated to development initiatives. As a consolidated group serving the entire Lower Mainland, LMBME offers exposure to a wide range of clinical areas. “If there’s a specialty you’re curious about, we likely have it,” says Dylan. “Our culture of growth and mentorship is something we’re proud of.”

Looking ahead

As technology becomes increasingly integrated into patient care, the demand for skilled Biomedical Engineering professionals will only grow. Emerging challenges, such as cybersecurity for medical devices, make this an exciting and evolving field.

“The world is your oyster,” Dylan says to anyone considering this career. “Technologist programs are usually just two years, and they open the door to a fascinating role where you solve problems and help people every day.”
