At the announcement on Tuesday, Premier John Horgan said the investment is crucial in order to modernize the facility.

“Burnaby Hospital will undergo a complete redevelopment. $1.3 billion invested for two new patient care towers, new boards, new operating rooms, 400 new beds – the majority of which will be single patient beds – [and] a bigger emergency room. Most importantly, and why we’ve decided to keep the facility here, a new cancer treatment centre to complement the great work we do here in B.C.”

Horgan said the revamped facility will have state of the art technology and extra staff. St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver and Royal Columbian in New Westminster are already undergoing upgrades.
